Styling Animal Print For The Office

Loft Animal Print Dress

I’m back lovelies!!  So sorry for the minor hiatus!  It’s really been just a little over a week but I feel super guilty and have missed you guys!! Between life, work, crazy weather etc. etc….  I’ve found myself caught without outfit inspiration on the days with great weather and sucky weather on the days when I was inspired!  Ugh!

Loft Animal Print Dress

But I am officially back!  One lesson that I have learned from this is to always have a backlog of posts and photos that can be pulled from the “vault” when needed.  Just in case….  I started creating that backlog today (I shot like 3 different looks) and hopefully…  even with life’s craziness that hits us all from time to time…  I won’t miss a beat!!

Loft Animal Print Dress

Now, I thought it only appropriate that my first post back should feature my absolute fashion favorite — animal print!  You guys know I love all things animal print!  I’ve featured every possible piece, in every possible way with the exception of styling an office look.  So, of course, I decided to pull that out for today.

Loft Animal Print Dress

This dress from Loft is perfect for so many reasons…  It is a muted version of animal print with non-traditional colors, which is just right for a more reserved office look (just add blazer).  But even more so, I love the versatility of it.  This dress can literally be worn year round.  It’s sleeveless so it’s a no brainer for summer (this time just add cute sandals).  But it’s also spot on for fall/winter too (cue the tights and ankle boots please.  In fact, that is how I wore this dress for the first time).

Do you rock animal print at the office?  How do you style it?  What’s your most versatile piece right now?  Let me know.

OOTD: Denim on Denim

Denim on Denim

You know, I can not remember the last time I rocked double denim.  Ok…  I take that back.  I can remember.  It was sometime in the early 90′s, it was for my brother and I’s last “portrait” together and it was light wash denim!  That photo is still on my parent’s fridge… so maybe somehow, psychologically, I had blocked denim on denim out of my closet “vocabulary”!!

Denim on Denim

Flash forward to now and there is no question that it has become hugely popular again!  And this time, it just looks plain cool!  It’s become a staple street wear item for fashionistas, celebrities are rockin’ it left and right and it’s been all over the fashion runways!

Denim on Denim

The thing is… while I have been loving the “Canadian Tuxedo” on others, I just haven’t been sure about how I would like it for myself.

Denim on Denim

Turns out…  I kinda like it!  I love this boatneck top from J. Crew and it only felt right to style it as a denim on denim look.  I think the trick for working denim on denim is to mix the washes as much as possible, add in pops of color and glam it up with heel!

Trend Alert: Fringe Benefits

Ann Taylor Fringe Top

I decided to tackle one of the hottest trends this spring – FRINGE!!  Now, I have to be honest….  I would have never really called myself a fan of fringe before.  In fact, I am pretty sure that I have never owned anything with fringe (except maybe a suede purse when I was in like Junior High).  It’s not that I had anything against fringe necessarily… it would just always make me think of cowboys and westerns!!

Ann Taylor Fringe Top

But the fringe of today is definitely not the fringe of years past.  This trend has been completely reinvented into something so fun and versatile that I actually think there is something for everyone!  Tops, skirts, jackets, purses, shoes, even accessories like scarves, necklaces and earrings.  It can easily be dressed up or dressed down too…  you name it… it’s available!  Designers having definitely taken a modern twist on this trend; uniquely combining fringe details with other great trends too: prints, bold patterns, stripes, pastels…

Ann Taylor Fringe Top

It was the versatility in options that really made me excited to give it a try.  And when I saw this top from Ann Taylor… I knew this was the one!  You know I’m crushing on color and prints right now… so this fringe just pushed it right over the top for me!  I decided to style this look more casually with boyfriend jeans but I can easily see myself rockin’ this with a cute skirt for a fun night out or with some white skinny trousers for brunch!

OOTD: The Chevron Print Wrap Dress

Banana Republic Chevron Print Wrap Dress

If you have been reading the blog over the past few weeks, then you know I have been on a major mission to break out as much color as possible as we transition to warmer weather.  I’ve not only become obsessed with color but when I looked back over my recent purchases, I seem to have this thing going with bold prints too!

Banana Republic Chevron Print Wrap Dress

I have to admit that I used to shy away from bold prints, in particular any type of striped pattern!  You would have never seen me in a chevron print dress or striped pants years ago!  My fashion “threshold” has definitely changed since starting to blog and I’m quite glad.

Banana Republic Chevron Print Wrap DressI picked up this dress simply for that very reason too — it was so bold.  I loved the colors and I loved the fabulous zig zag print!  Yet, even though the print can certainly speak for itself, I think a perfect way to style chevron is by adding pops of color to it!  I added my pink bag and earrings to this look but you can accomplish the same thing by adding color with your shoes or other pieces of jewelry.

The Perfect Spring Transition Piece: The Blazer

Spring Transition H&M Blazer

With the official start of spring just a few short days ago, I decided to also officially transition to my spring attire! Honestly, I had already started making that transition a few weeks back but now I am ALL IN!  And, yes, I know that winter is apparently not going down without  a fight but….  enough of it already…  I am ready for even more vibrant florals, bold stripes and fun and festive prints!

Spring Transition H&M Blazer

I actually picked up this blazer from H&M a few weeks back just for that very reason.  I loved the bold colors and the textured check print!  And of course there is no better transition piece for spring than a statement blazer!  It may not be quite warm enough yet to pull out the sundresses and shorts without an additional layer but a blazer is the perfect compliment in the meantime.  And the great thing about transitioning from one season to the next is that this is the best time to mix and match pieces from different seasons!  It’s the ideal time to experiment!

Spring Transition H&M Blazer

For this particular look, I decided to make it all about the pops of color!  I’ve been wanting to style this purse too so the blazer was the perfect excuse for me to experiment and highlight this beautiful coral hue!

OOTD: Spring Greens & “Kendra’s Night Out” Style Challenge

J Crew Striped Skimmers

The weather here in Charlotte has been beautiful for about a week…  mid 70′s just about every day.  Perfection!! Yet on the day that I decide to write this post, it is,  of course currently 40 degrees outside!  Ugh!  Old Man Winter go away already!!

J Crew Striped Skimmers

Anyway, hopefully today’s slip back into the vortex is just that…  a temporary slip back.  I have no plans on giving up my transition to spring – even if it is a little early!  I’m ready to get out of my wardrobe rut and there is no better way to do that than by transitioning to a new season of clothes and spring inspired looks!

J Crew Striped Skimmers

I am again obsessed with color this season and for some reason have had this odd fascination with green in particular!  When I saw these J. Crew Factory pants online, I immediately started lusting after them.  I debated back and forth, visited the site several times a day until I just couldn’t take it anymore.  I love the bold stripes and the general color palette is great and there, of course,  is my color crush green!!

J Crew Striped Skimmers

I wore this to work the other day but could easily see myself wearing these pants to brunch with the girls or an even less casual occasion.

Kendra Prepares for a Night Out in Vegas

“I love life and enjoy spending time with my husband and children, but I have moments in which I’m not entirely fabulous. In a few weeks, I get to spend some time with friends in Las Vegas. While I’m looking forward to this getaway, I think I need some help from my readers to prepare. Will you help me pick an awesome outfit to wear when my friends and I go to The Palms Casino and Resort for a night in Sin City? To help inspire your ideas, here’s a little bit about where we’ll be hanging out:

GhostBar

I love a great view, and some of the best views in all of Las Vegas can be found at GhostBar. Located on the 55th floor of The Palms, this lounge features a balcony with a glass panel through which visitors can gaze down on the city lights. GhostBar doesn’t feature a dance floor, but intimate gatherings and plenty of fun with friends are always on the menu. I plan on having fun with my friends here and perhaps making a few new ones during the evening.

Sin City has a unique vibe. The local color and the style of the city can’t be compared to any other in the world. To plan the perfect trip I like to read reviews on Gogobot and figure out exactly where I want to go! I always enjoy my time here, no matter what activities are on my agenda. Whether I’m gambling at the casino, grabbing a few drinks with friends, dancing the night away or attending a breathtaking show on the strip, I have an even better time when I know I look great. I look forward to seeing your great ideas for what I should wear on my next adventure in Sin City. While your gathering ideas, why not book your own trip? I know you’ll love Las Vegas as much as I do.”

Jumpsuits are definitely all the rage right now so I chose this TopShop jumpsuit as the center piece for Kendra’s look.  It’s practical yet very edgy for a night out!  This look can easily take Kendra from dinner to a night out at The Palms GhostBar (losing the blazer of course)!!

What do you think?

My First H&M Experience – Spring Florals

H&M Spring Floral Look

Yes, believe it or not…  I had never purchased anything from H&M.  Never.  In fact, until a few weekends ago, I had only been in an H&M store one time before in my entire life and that was probably 10 years ago on a trip to NY.  And on that particular occasion, while I liked some of the looks in the store, I didn’t purchase anything because everything seemed to be sized so small.

H&M Spring Floral Look

So fast forward to a few weeks back…  H&M opened their second location locally in Charlotte at Carolina Place Mall and well… I decided to check them out.  I’ll be honest, I wanted to check out the selection yes… but it was more so just to pass the time and to say that I had been (that’s horrible to admit, right?).

H&M Spring Floral Look

Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised.  The store felt fresh, it was well organized and was a generous size too.  And to top it off…  the selection was pretty good.  In fact, I ended up finding a few items that I liked.  Now…  I did have a little bit of anxiety heading to the dressing room but I decided to go ahead and size up based on my prior experience and actually ended up liking what I picked.

H&M Spring Floral Look

It happened that I was on the hunt for a floral look (ProFlowers reached out to me to style my favorite floral inspired look) so when I saw these pants I decided to give them a go!  I love the pants but I really love the top.  I adore the versatility of it (I actually wore it with jeans later in the day) more than anything.  Finally, I decided to top the look off with the pop of pink from my Dooney and Bourke bag!!

Warby Parker Spring 2014 Collection

Warby Parker Spring Collection - Walker Canton BlueMost of you probably don’t realize this but I am pretty much blind without the help of “corrective lenses”!  You don’t know this, of course, because I  generally always wear my contact lenses , in particular for photos.  But with eyeglasses becoming more and more popular as an fashion accessory and so many brands now offering a variety of color and style choices…  I have become increasingly on the search for a pair that matches my own personal style!

Enter Warby Parker….

Warby Parker Spring 2014 Collection I was extremely excited when Warby Parker reached out to me about their new Spring 2014 collection.  For those of you not familiar with the brand, Warby Parker was conceived as an alternative to some of the overpriced and traditional eyewear available today.  By engaging with customers directly through their website, Warby Parker is able to provide high-quality, great-looking prescription eyewear at a fraction of the price.  Additionally, Warby Parker offers “eyewear with a purpose” by partnering with non-profits to ensure that for every pair of glasses sold, a pair is distributed to someone in need.

For 2014, there are 2 new collections being introduced: The Spring Collection (which offers eight new shapes and six new colors) and the Palm Canyon Collection (which refreshes some of their best-loved frames in a palette of mesquite, acacia, ironwood, and sand).

Home Try On Warby ParkerI decided to leverage Warby Parker’s Home Try On program to try out some of the frames.  The program allows you to try on 5 pairs of eyeglasses (for 5 days) for free!  One of the frames I selected was the Walker in Canton Blue from the Spring Collection (see below).

Warby Parker - Walker Canton Blue

I was definitely impressed with the ease of the program and absolutely adored the frames.  The quality was spot on, the style and color choices were fabulous and the prices were even better (as most were priced at $95)!

Below (Top, Left to Right then Bottom, Left to Right): Arthur in Green Spruce, Ainsworth in Elderberry, Sims in Striped Sassafrass, and Marshall in Rum Cherry.

What do you think of “eyeglasses for fashion”?  Which pair of frames is your favorite?  And of course, if you haven’t had an opportunity to check out Warby Parker…  make sure that you do!!

Tube It: The Topshop Tube Skirt

Topshop Checked Tube Skirt

Can you tell that I am completely in love with the tube skirt right now?  Yep, this may be my latest obsession (there is always something you know)!  Anyway, I think I have picked up maybe 3 or 4 in the past few weeks (yes, yes I know – I have a problem… need therapy…. blah, blah, blah!).   There is just something about the silhouette that is so alluring to me though!

Topshop Checked Tube Skirt

Honestly, I love the fit more than anything else.  As soon as I tried this skirt on…  I knew it was coming home!  The fit is spot on…. a high waist, midi length and just the right balance of stretch and structure to be perfectly form fitting!  It holds it all together and hugs a girl in all of the right places!  You can’t help but feel confident and sexy!  The tube skirt is great option, as it is flattering on pretty much every body type!

Topshop Checked Tube Skirt

I loved the print and colors on this particular skirt so I decided to style it in a fun way by adding the cropped sweatshirt too (remember my style tips from my last post The Cropped Boyfriend Sweatshirt??).

The Cropped Boyfriend Sweatshirt

Cropped Boyfriend Sweatshirt

I have been wanting to rock a cropped top for awhile now but have been super hesitant to make it happen.  I love the idea of the cropped top and the trend itself but I also recognize that this trend is one that I really need to tailor to my age, body and style.  (I am just not the one for baring that level of skin anymore…  at least not like that anyway!!)

Cropped Boyfriend Sweatshirt

After some browsing around, I finally found this cropped boyfriend sweatshirt at Nordstrom Rack and had to have it!  I loved the color scheme but more than anything, it was the slouchy (yet cropped) fit that appealed to me.  It made me think of the 80′s, the movie Flashdance and Madonna!!

Cropped Boyfriend Sweatshirt

I decided to layer this look by adding a printed cami underneath (which I also distressed at the side seams).  There was definitely a lot of experimenting that day.  I experimented with the distressing, obviously with the look, and I was also experimenting with different filters on my iPhone camera too (as I didn’t really plan to take photos and didn’t have my DSLR with me )!  I actually like how it all turned out!  Layering the distressed cami underneath made the look more appropriate for my body and age yet still added some edge, spunk and personal style!

Cropped Boyfriend Sweatshirt

If a printed cami isn’t your thing, there are other great ways to style the cropped top without necessarily baring it all.  A high rise skirt is a great compliment, or wearing the top over a dress.  I also like the idea of layering the top over a tank top or maybe even a chambray or plaid button down.  Lots of options to experiment and make it your own.
